At 900m above sea level, Lake Toba has a relatively cool climate, spectacular scenery and fascinating culture. This 4-day tour takes in a visit to the sacred island Samosir and a guided journey through the Karo Highlands. 

Lake Toba is a spectacular destination with magnificent scenery and home to the Batak Toba tribe with its unique architectural history and culture. Danau (lake) Toba is the largest in South East Asia: 100 km long, 30 km wide, and over 500m deep. It formed in one of the world’s biggest ever volcanic eruptions, about 75,000 years ago. It’s surrounded by tall mountains and in its centre is the sacred island of Samosir. Many of the Toba Batak traditional houses (rumah adat) remain on the  island.



Sample itinerary

Day 1: Your trip begins in Medan, one of the biggest cities in northern Sumatra. It’s a 5h drive to Perapat through palm tree, rubber and cacao plantations and the historic city of Pematang Siantar. Lunch is at a local restaurant and in the afternoon you will arrive at the ferry boat terminal for the crossing to Samosir. On arrival you are checked into your hotel and have the afternoon at leisure enjoying views across Lake Toba (your hotel is at the lake side).

Day 2: On this magnificent island, you will visit the typical Toba Batak villages: Tomok with its kings' tombs, Ambarita with its megalith execution tables and in Simanindo you will see a traditional Batak dance. Time permitting in the afternoon you can optionally try the Lake Toba kayaking tour.

Day 3: Today we will drive back to Medan passing through the mountain village of Brastagi in the Karo Highlands with its pineapple, clove and ginger plantations. You’ll stop at the tribal kings' house of the Simalungun Batak in Pematang Purba and at the Sipisu Pisu waterfalls. At 120m, this is one of the highest in Indonesia. In the afternoon you arrive in Brastagi to view two active volcanoes: Sibayak and Sinabung, before arriving back in Medan for the night. 

Day 4: Transfers to the airport in Medan for you continued travels or journey home.
