For the adventurous traveler, on this trip from Jakarta, you’ll visit World Heritage Ujung Kulon National Park, home to critically endangered Javan Rhinos. You’ll take remote river trips and journey to Krakatoa, camping on its black sand, snorkeling on fringing reefs and enjoying views from a short climb of child of Krakatoa.

On the south western of the island of Java, where the vast expanse of the Indian Ocean and equatorial waters of the Sunda Straits merge, is one of Indonesia’s paramount national parks, Ujung Kulon. Rich in wildlife, it is the home of the critically endangered Javan Rhinoceros and holds the status of World Heritage (natural) site. Nearby is the infamous volcano Krakatau.

Sample itinerary

Day 1: We pick you up in Jakarta early morning as it takes the whole morning to drive to Labuan then to Sumur fishing village, the gate of Ujung Kulon National Park. From Sumur, we board a boat to Handeuleum Island. Lunch is provided on the boat before we meet our park ranger and check in at the lodge before our canoe trip to the Ujung Kulon Peninsula along the Cigenter river. These waters meander through dense overhanging rain forest, inhabited by pythons and kingfishers, where the crocodiles and rhinoceros may also be seen on rare occasions. We make a make stop for a short trek to a rhinoceros wallow,  before returning for dinner on Handeuleum Island.

Day 2: After breakfast at 8am you take a boat to Cibom than trek to Ciramea, travelling through magnificent rainforest before arriving at  a beautiful beach fringed with jungle and the Indian ocean background. Ebony Leaf Monkeys, Hornbills, Javan Civet and Giant Squirrel can all be seen here. Another 4 hours back to Peucang island we stop for a rest and lunch before continuing to Citerjun for snorkeling then overnight at an ecolodge.

Day 3: After breakfast we leave Peucang Island and cross to Krakatau (2.5h). On the way, we often see flying fish, small Tuna and dolphins. Upon arrival, we sail around the active volcano (child of Krakatoa), where you can see stem larva. If weather permits (it can be very dusty and windy) we may climb up the first level of child of Krakatoa. We also spend some free time during the day swimming and snorkeling before making camp at big Krakatoa. Tonight you will relax or walk nearby, returning to a bonfire and barbeque fish.

Day 4: After breakfast you’re transfered to Carita harbour by speed boat (1.5h) with a stop for lunch on the way before continuing back to your hotel in Jakarta.

Day 5: Fly home after an incredible Krakatau and Ujung Kulon Adventure.
